Home Wine Cellars – Under the Stairs in Orange County
Every job home wine cellar starts with an inspiration or a space that the client wants to go convert. The first thing we, as wine cellar designers like to ask them is, “What is your goal, do you have any specific inspiration for the design?”
Most people, once they get to us, have typically thought about it quite a bit. You know, they’ve gone to Pinterest, they’ve gone to our website. Or Houzz, or even other people’s websites. And they’ve found kind of what they like, so I would say nine out of 10 times, most clients can say, oh, this is what I like. And they present us with something. We take that as our starting point. There are also essential factors that we consider before building a home wine cellar. Then our wine cellar designer’s springboard from there and design for them something consistent with their core idea.
That takes us to all the different elements of a home wine cellar. Under stair home wine cellars like this have a lot of different elements. Wood types, finishes, cooling systems, lighting, flooring, feature display areas, and bulk storage space.
For this home wine cellar under-stair space, they told us their rough measurements, and we were able to gauge what the layout was going to be. As wine cellar designers we like to give people a ballpark budget of what things cost. Most people don’t have a concept of what, building a home wine cellar truly is.
They are essentially building a very large refrigerator, that process is not inexpensive. In this home, the under-stairs wine cellar went through a few kinds of cellars that we have built.
We try and find out what they visually want to see within their cellar. In this case, they didn’t like diamond-style racking, however, they did like having bottles displayed there’s this combination of volume versus display, in this case, we decided to have an open space in the middle of the cellar. This gives you, a nice feature display area. As you can see here, what they did they displayed some of their personal keepsakes that have special meaning to them.
Once we had all the design aspects of it down, then it was just a matter of putting it into production. What we did here is we took an under-stair space that the clients just really wanted to maximize storage capacity. They really love their love, their wine. They just wanted to create something that would be a showpiece for them.
They do a lot of entertaining, and they’ve got some good wines. And they’re really on their way to filling it up. They’re about 40% full right now.
As you can see here, custom glass, dual pane glass, really seals in the cool their under-stair spaces and tends to be a little more with the cooling aspect of it because we can’t really hide them as well. So as you can see here, what we did is we have a commercial cooling unit from U.S. Cellar Systems that is tucked behind a custom grill space. So it just really looks like it, it grew there.
Everything here is just custom-stained Oak and just built to their specifications. They’ve now gone to personalizing it, with lots of display cases. They have room for their magnums in that area. And then on the, on the end cap, there just a really cool way to kind of display some wine to everybody.
As professional wine cellar designers, Vintage Cellars are super pleased with how this came out. More importantly, though the clients absolutely love it.
This is a commercial RM system. So this is a split system. So the split system is rack-mounted and then you’ve got the condenser that is on right on the side yard. So we’ve run our lines through their garage on the other side and out to the side yard with an under-stair space cooling, it can be a little bit of a challenge because there’s usually no place to put, to hide a cooling system. So in this case, in our cooling system design, we had to build our racking around the cooling system. We also install the insulation because that’s a huge component of building a home wine cellar. It has to be fully insulated.
Otherwise, it’s just not going to work properly, if it’s not done right it’s going to cost you a lot of money. So dual-pane insulated glass in metal frames is pretty much a must. That along with closed cell spray foam behind the walls. We then installed the cooling system, installed the custom wine racks and that’s where we are today.
All of our, uh, cooling systems are, installed by properly licensed HVAC technicians who understand home wine cellar cooling systems. Wine cellars are a completely different beast than a regular traditional HVAC system.
Wood wine cellars take longer to build as they are all custom-made by awesome craftsmen and cabinet makers. We’re just racking right now. We’re at probably about 10 to 12 weeks. Um, for that, you know, probably two years ago, that number was probably more like six to eight weeks, you know, but obviously current times everybody’s extremely busy, but so that typically is where we’re at right now.
In that time, we can usually get a lot of the other things done, you know? So there might be an additional two weeks to get everything finalized, and installed, maybe take two days. You know, we basically do everything to piece them in there. Our craftsmen come in and they do all the finishing touches as well.
If a client wants a dark finish stain, in that case, I don’t necessarily recommend them going with higher-end woods, as you’re going to be doing a dark stain anyways, if you’re doing a lighter stain where you’re going to see more of the natural wood elements to it. In that case, they may want to go with higher-end Oak or Walnut.
We always build our cellars such that we are cognizant of maintenance when we do it. In fact, with this cellar, the wood grill pulls off. So you can easily get inside to do maintenance on the cooling system.
As for the lighting, we do LED lighting in our racks. However, it is going to be dependent on the type of racking system that we use. But when we’re talking about wood, there are a few different areas where you can put LED-based lighting. We always put LED lighting on that high reveal or the angle. That’s where it produces the best look for custom home wine cellars.
Whether you want a traditional or modern wine cellar, it is necessary that your lighting illuminates it attractively without overdoing it. By using LED lights, you can highlight your wine cellar and other areas in your racking dramatically.

With various styles of LED lighting systems available, you have to make sure that your choice will suit your requirements. You can choose between track lighting (also known as spotlighting), recessed can lights, accent lighting, indirect lighting (e.g., wall sconces), or chandeliers. You may combine any of these lighting systems to create the mood that you want and highlight some of your bottles on display.
